Ms. Fleming earned her BA and MA in the Visual Arts with an emphasis on Fine Art Education which lead to an extensive teaching career as well as kept the creative fires burning and ready to encourage her students to explore their own hidden unique expressions as well as learning all the fundamentals of art design, history, and the variety of art media usages. Mid life events and lending help to family became of extreme importance after years of teaching with not much time for creating. Teacher preparations at the university level included many different media, subjects, and areas to cover in teaching. Susan feels very blessed to have had this background and now loves combining these skills into her own one of a kind pieces, thankfully the present time allows for personal artistic explorations to constantly develop and flourish.
As a recent transplant to the Carolinas from Arizona, Susan Fleming’s (S Lance Fleming) art has opened up in new directions. Ms. Fleming works in a variety of mixed media and styles: from stylized, abstract, realistic, and /or a combination of these; often they are layered and pieced together in collage style. She is striving to create fresh images from her subconscious, rather than duplicating what is visually seen, reaching for what is at the emotional and spiritual levels.
StatementSusan Fleming/S Lance Fleming
I am Susan Fleming, a mixed media artist born and raised in Arizona where I completed my B.A. and M.A. in the Fine Arts with an emphasis on Visual Arts Education.
My work consists of variety of expressions from stylized, abstract, realistic, and /or a combination of these; often they are mixed media layered and pieced together in collage style. I have a desire to create fresh unique images from my subconscious, rather than duplicating what is visually seen.
The common thread connecting my currant body of work is an inner spirit connection which develops in phases and relates to a variety of human conditions and experiences.
A large part of the discovery phases are spent understanding how each of the different media can interact together and in a variety of combinations in order for the layering to divulge underlying elements which then lend to the continuity of the compositions. I do not have predetermined outcomes. I truly enjoy this ceaseless urge toward fresh original abstract creations. I pray my art endeavors emotionally engage the viewers’ inner soul/spirit and encourage personal healing, hope, and inspiration.
